WWW Password Protection
To Password Protect a directory go to the Web Based FTP section of the control panel. Password protection is not allowed in the root directory. You may only password protect directories below the root. For this tutorial, we have created a directory called "pprotect_demo".
Since we are in a directory below the root, we now have the option to password protect.
Currently, this directory has password protection disabled. You can check if a directory is password protected by looking at the icon underneath the Up One Level Button. Here the icon is red with an arrow facing down which represent that the password protection is disabled. If password protection was enable the icon would be green with an arrow facing up.
To password protect a directory simply enter a username and password in the appropiate fields and then click on the Add button. To add more than username and password for a folder simply repeat the process.
After you have clicked on the add button, the following message will appear at the top of the screen.
If you view a directory below a directory that is already password protected you will see a blue icon with an "I" on it. This is the Inheritance button and means that this directory is accessible with one or more inherited accounts.
You also have the option of password protecting a directory that is already password protected via Inheritance. If this is done, the directory will be accessible with the username you create directly on it and also with all inherited usernames.
To view the inheritance of a folder click on the blue button with the I.
The Inheritance window will displays all password protection usernames/passwords on directories above this one. Here you can see that this directory has inherited two usernames and passwords from the directory above it.
You may edit a username and password by selecting from the drop list a user and clicking on the edit button.
Here you can modify the username/pasword or delete it completely.
If you are deleting a password protected user that is being inherited to sub directories, and it is the only user left for that directory, a prompt will come up after you select delete. This is done because if you delete this user you will also delete the user for the subfolder. Password protection is only disabled on a directory after you have deleted all users on it.
